Cora's Family Tree
The first image I wanted to create was Cora's family tree. I thought it was important to talk about the life of the characters in this book. Many slaves on plantations were sold quickly, and many did not know their lineage. In the book we were given Cora's family. Ajarry was sold from Africa, she was separated from her family and put on a different ship. Her family's ship developed the Plague and the ship was burned down. Ajarry was sold many times before she died. Ajarry had 5 children but only one lived bast 10, Cora's mother Mabel. Mabel escaped the plantation and was never heard of again.
Character Development
Cora as a character changed throughout the book. While she was at the plantation in Georgia she was obedient, and rarely acted against what she was told. Every time someone was to mention leaving the plantation she was strongly against it, one reason for this could be because her mother left and never came back. One change the readers saw in Cora was in the beginning of the book, when Terrance started beating Chester over the head with his cane. Cora stepped in and tried to stop the beating, only to be struck herself. Her first stop after leaving the plantation was South Carolina, Cora found a new type of racism. While Cora was working for a Museum she found that the people running it was controlling reproduction. Cora's job at the Museum was to be a living mannequin. She would work in exhibits such as the “plantation”, “slave ship”, and the “Darkest Africa” displays. Cora developed a new outlook of what being "free" means to her.
